A Beginner's Guide to Prescription Discount Cards

Rx coupon cards allow patients to receive a reduced rate from the original listed retail price.

This can result in savings of up to 80% on many prescriptions.

How do Prescription Discount Cards Work?

The patient will bring a prescription discount card to the pharmacy.

Rather than the pharmacist entering the patient’s insurance information into their system, they will input the Rx coupon code.

The patient will then receive a discounted price for that prescription.

For example, Lipitor has an average retail price of $438.46. However, with the right prescription discount card, the price can be found for under $3.

⭐️ Tip - Rx discount cards cannot be used simultaneously with insurance coverage. However, using a discount card could make the price even lower than your insurance copay.

Do all Prescription Discount Cards Offer the Same Savings?

Every prescription savings card has different discounts negotiated with the pharmacy, and this process typically goes through a pharmacy benefits manager (PBM).

There is a misconception that all Rx coupons offer the same reduced drug rate, which is unfortunate because many discounts are missed yearly due to this false narrative.

The chart below shows the price you will pay with the Rx coupons from each prescription discount card company.
